Christian Hip/Hop nominee Micheal A.V. Mitchell

Micheal A. V. Mitchell nominated for Christian Hip/Hop Artist of the Year

Michael A.V. Mitchell grew up in St. Francisville, near Baton Rouge, where I wrote poetry, but didn’t take converting it into music seriously until I was in my early 20’s. Things that surrounded me and a passion to reach others took my interest in music to another level. I’m a graduate of Southern University A&M College, youth leader, and music minister. In the state of Louisiana I’ve overcame various challenges which are embodied in my ministry. Music, motivation, and ministry are the key components of my assignment. The form of music that I utilize the most is gospel rap, considering the youth are my primary target.

When it is used correctly it is very effective in reaching the mind, will, and emotions of those who hear it. My mission is to share the gospel, motivate and uplift, plant hopes and dreams, compel people to come to God, ignite the passion for righteousness, salvation, success, and change throughout the world by the power and authority of Jesus Christ. In the duration of my life I’ve traveled many places operating in the gift of music as well as speaking.

The ability to convey messages through music is more than a talent or well articulated skill, but it’s a ministerial tool. It’s also a solution to a problem. The problem that I’m speaking of is the negativity and damnation that’s in the music that the world, mainly the youth listen to on a day to day basis.

Gospel Choir of the Year nominee Walter Smith & Tru Praize

Walter Smith & Tru Praize nominated for Gospel Choir of the Year

Gospel musician/director, songwriter Walter Smith was born and raised both in Baldwin, Michigan and Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he inherited a love for gospel music from his dad, who is a former recording artist with the Spiritual Travelers and his grandparents and began singing in a church choir at an early age. After 7 years of studying classical piano, Walter began playing for the Sunday school department at his home church, First Baptist Church of Baldwin, Michigan and directing the youth choir in his church (starting at the age of five), and later the adult choirs. It was around this time that Walter came across specific recordings of James Cleveland and Aretha Franklin's "Amazing Grace" with the Southern California Community Choir, Clara Ward Singers, Rev. James Cleveland and Southern California Community Choir, New Jerusalem Baptist Church of Flint, Michigan that would inspire him to pursue gospel music even more zealously.

Shortly thereafter, Walter drew inspiration from other gospel performers including Thomas Whitfield, Bethel Pentecostal Church Choir, Mattie Moss-Clark, the Clark Sisters and Keith Pringle. While attending college in Grand Rapids, Walter continued to direct and play for St. Paul Baptist Church and for choirs locally and later became a member of the Bethel Pentecostal Church of Grand Rapids, MI where he began to study under the tutelage of his music mentor, the late Eld. L. Craig Tyson, and was a faithful member of the Youth Inspirational Choir. Walter later moved to Detroit, Michigan where he continued his musical gifts that God had blessed him with.

After much prayer, in March, 2009, Walter Smith & Tru Praize was manifested. On October 18, 2009, our music ministry was consecrated and prayed over during our standing room only consecration service by our spiritual advisor and Walter’s pastor, District Eld. Michael Martin. Since that time, God has truly opened up many doors for this ministry. This choir has been blessed to minister to the masses not only in the Detroit Metropolitan Area, but throughout the state of Michigan and nationally. Although these short three years haven't been easy and the choir was met with much opposition from many locally, God CONTINUTED to be faithful and to give the ministry strength to press on. Comprised of 19 holy ghost filled young adults, God continues to pour out fresh oil upon the choir as we minister to his people.

The choir celebrated their first live recording session, June 25, 2011 in Detroit, Michigan and eagerly anticipates their CD release, August, 10, 2012.  To GOD be the glory for the things he has done and continues to do.

Christian Hip/Hop Nominee Jordan Olgetree aka JTreeZ

Jordan Ogletree aka JTreeZ "Christian Hip/Hop Nominee

Jordan Louis Ogletree aka JTreeZ (J-Tree-Zey) is a Christian Rap artist from the North West side of Houston, TX. He is the son of Pastors John & Evelyn Ogletree of First Metropolitan Church, also in Houston, TX. He is the youngest brother of Johnny Ogletree III, Lambreni Waddell, and Joseph Ogletree. Jordan is the proud uncle of 7 nieces and 3 nephews. His top 3 priorities will always be 1) God 2) Family 3) Me. You have to love God, your family, and yourself first to show genuine true love to others.

Jordan followed in his brother Joseph’s footsteps exceling in sports at an early age. Although he had a strong love for art and music in his early years, they were overshadowed by his love for sports. In high school, he recorded in a studio for the first time going to a friend’s house and making songs after school and football practice was over. It was at this point that Jordan first really noticed that he had an unusual talent to rap, creating music that people like. He then began to remix secular song and make them into Christian song for the teen ministry at his church. In spite of early success and support of his music by others, Jordan stayed focusing on his love for sports.  He earned a scholarship to play football for Nicholls State University where he obtained his Bachelors and MBA in just five years. He worked really hard in school and was heavily involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Although he dreamed of playing in the NFL, God led him down a different path upon graduating. Jordan moved back to Houston to find a corporate position and pursue his love of music.

Today JTreeZ says music reminds him of events and people in his life, good and bad. He believes that music is a very powerful tool: it can change your emotions, it can educate you, and it can get into your mind without you wanting it to (Have you ever started humming a song that popped up in your mind out of nowhere)?  JTreeZ wants to use music, as a method to spread the message of Jesus Christ. He wants to encourage and inspire people to have faith in God and keep pushing through the trails they face in life. “God's given me a musical talent and I'm going to use it to spread His word and help everyone around me. I believe I can relate to people on every type of level. This is my destiny and I believe that there are people in this world who need to hear my music. I know the struggles we face day to day. I'm young but believe me, I’ve just about seen and been through it all. The image that most rappers create and the lifestyles they glorify and sell to people are not authentic.

They glorify all of these negative aspects of life and tell people “that is the way life is.” I want to address some of the same things they talk about but speak the truth about it. I want to tell what living that type of lifestyle has done to humanity. I also want to talk about other more important topics that most people can truly relate to. Not the fantasy life, but the reality of struggles as well as joys of life that we experience every day.  With God’s grace and favor I’m going to use music put a positive message in the lives of people. I know I will do great things with God on my side and I look forward to seeing where all he wants to take me.

"In Christ there is liberty and salvation and I pray people find that in my music!” –JTreeZ-

Jeremy Thrash Christian/Hip Hop Artist of the Year in 2013 Gospel Music Awards

2013 Gospel Music Awards Nominee Jeremy Thrash

A lost and dying, wicked, perverse world needs help. There is a way out…. Jesus and He brought backup. Born Jeremy Micah Thrash on February 24, 1987, Money is fresh-faced artist (not of men, neither by man) out of Mobile, AL with ambitions of spreading the mystery of the Gospel through hip hop/rap music. Named after two biblical prophets, Jeremiah and Micah, Money was instilled the word of God at a young age. Adopted by Apostle Jeffrey & Prophetess Sandra Denise Thrash of Goodwill Church Ministries, Money embraced a love for art at the tender age of 3. Growing up in “two-worlds” Money distinguished differences between the mindsets and behaviors from inside the walls of home and that of the outside world. Having a Christian-based home that exercised Godly living meanwhile outside he witnessed poverty, violence, hardships, undeserved suffering, etc.

Not wanting to be discounted among his peers he gradually adopted the ways of the world. It wasn’t until the concluding semesters in high school that Money found a interest in music. Playing for his high school band, John L. Leflore, he took up a passion for creating sounds that produce effect. Uniting himself with a high school friend the two began freestyling and trading off bars amazing fellow peers with witty commentary. Soon the two hooked up with another high school beat maker, there Money interest in rapping quickly turned into an obsession. Being noted for his lyrical ability, versatile swagger, and deep metaphors he continued to drop a handful of mixtapes with friends. Going under the name Mobillionaires, originated by Money himself, as a independent record label in the making Money and friends began hitting the streets passing out flyers, selling CD’s, and performing at local talent shows. In the course of getting the name Mobillionaires trademarked, Money found to his surprise the name had been stolen by another local group who he had previously been in competitions with. Taking more losses than gains Money began contemplating whether pursuing music as a suitable choice for a career. Now married with wife pregnant with first-born child, providing financially became precedence. Working two jobs, one day Money was offered the opportunity to work full time in his fathers ministry. An occasion in which Money rejected and ignored numerous times growing up.

Finally accepting his calling, God wasted no time in exposing revelations, and uncovering His will for Money’s life. During a spiritual conversation with God, Money asked since he had went by the name, “Money” in the secular world would it be favorable if he transformed it to go with his new image. Weeks passed with no answer, until God unexpectedly responded with, “look in the dictionary.” Opening a dictionary immediately Money ran across these words, “medium of exchange.” As he meditated a revelation was brought to light. God spoke, “just as money is recognized as an instrument used as a measure of the value of goods and services, I want you to become my medium.” “You give the world a message from me, and in return I (God) receive the glory.” Then God ended with, “People die for money, I died for you.” Now understanding his new found identity and purpose, Money began working on his first solo project, self-entitled, Lyrical Renaissance, a inspiring, poetic, and emotional album themed to making hip hop “born-again.” Using live instruments with deep lyrics by way of substance, Money is looking to baffle critics, alter and edify traditional minded Christians, and deliver lost generations from eternal damnation.

Separating himself from the brash cocky stunting, and the ghetto pompous image hip-hop is known for marketing, Money polishes his craft to reflect the Kingdom of God, not the world. Therefore, creating a culture within a culture. Today Money is working full time in his families ministry, as youth pastor (Heritage House via Goodwill Church Ministries), at the same time still changing lives and pulling interest of both young and old with his music.

The Green Family & NOOP - "2013 Nominee for Group of the Year"

2013 Gospel Music Awards Nominee - The Green Family & New Order of Praise

The Green Family singing career originated in the early 60’s, two teenaged sisters Arrie Lee Green and Dorothy Green begin singing in the Little Friendship Baptist Church choir in Atlanta, Georgia under the direction of Inez Mayfield, who took the girls under her wings. Arrie with her glass breaking soprano and Dorothy’s strong alto were noticed.

The Sisters were asked to join a newly formed gospel group “The Mozetts”, created by Alvin Jones and the late Donald Vales. The group performed weekly on WAOK AM radio with the late Brother Edsmond Patterson, Harrison Smith and many more. They also performed on Edsmond Patterson’s anniversary programs. In addition, they appeared with artist such as, The Five Trumpets, Soul Searchers, Inez Mayfield Gospel Singers, Dorothy Norwood and the late James Cleveland.

In later years, song writer and musician Donald Vales pursued his career with James Cleveland and moved from Atlanta. The Mozetts continued for a few years then ceased. In late 1971, Arrie wanted to start a group, this time with her four sisters, Dorothy, Barbara and her two teen-age siblings Loretta and Catherine.

In 1972 the five Green sisters joined Carey Park COGIC, under the leadership of the late Robert L. Humphries, Sr. The Lord had a different route for the sisters. After accepting Christ and the Holy Ghost, God’s anointing was felt through their singing. They were later named The Robert Humphries Singers and performed locally within COGIC events. They were members of the Northern Georgia Recording State Choir under the direction of Dr. Roosevelt Daniels. They also participated with the COGIC International Choir under the direction of the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clarke.

The late Lee (Pop) Green and Sarah were the parents of seven daughters’ one son Bobby (Sack) Green, who had his own singing career with The Essentials and Contagious, which were R & B groups. They traveled and open shows for various recording artists and recorded their album in the early 80’s.

During the years as the Green children raised their children, the anointing and talents were passed to the children and grandchildren.

In February 2009, God began to speak to Loretta’s son Charles, who is a talented and anointed musician. Charles formed a family fellowship meeting at Loretta’s house and informed his family what the Lord reveled to him regarding the families singing talent. “It is time for this family to start back ministering to the world through song”, said Charles. Charles was not aware that Bobby (Sack) was revealed the same message about the family. We knew that God was in this and we were on one accord with the call.

The name, “Green Family New Order of Praise” was introduced by Bobby (Sack) Green the way that the Lord had given it to him. God had already begun to bless with studio equipment and a place to work in Sack’s basement, which he constructed. The Green family is currently working on the first CD project and has begun to host listening sessions, which have been successful.

The Green Family was nominated and received the Group of the Year Award in 2012 by the NAGPM Organization in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, appeared on the Bobby Jones Gospel Presents for new artist in Nashville, Tennessee 2011.

This family chorale consists of the original Green siblings, Arrie, Dorothy, Bobby and his wife Irish who is talented and anointed in her writing; Barbara, Loretta, Catherine and the children; Charles, Tameikoe, Latisha and Bobby Jr. Our goal is to win souls for Christ through song. We dedicate our first single titled, “It’s In The Praise” to our late parents, Lee and Sarah Green and late grandmother, Zora “Big Ma” Ball.

By high school Jovonta was singing at several events: local talent shows, the national anthem at his high school basketball games (Edison High), and all over the Twin Cities.

Jovonta joined his first professional choir, Stellar Award-nominated Nu Friends Community Choir, in 2006 under the direction of James Grear. By 2007 Jovonta formed the community choir and organization Deliverance for Youth, better known as DFY. He directed this group of approximately 25 youth, from all different socio-economic backgrounds and all under the age of 21, with the purpose of E.A.S.Y (Empowering and Saving Youth). DFY released the album There is D.F.Y. (Live) in 2011 with several original songs penned by Jovonta, a gifted songwriter. During this time Jovonta really made his presence known in his community through his service to friends, family, and community residents in their time of grief in the death of youth and young adults, the majority of whom were victims of gun violence.

DFY continued on in success working with rock band Foreigner and the likes of gospel veterans Kim McFarland and Erron Williams, to name a few. As the youth matured Jovonta formed The DFY Summer Program, allowing youth of all backgrounds, ages 5 to 26, to participate with DFY to sing on his first solo live CD recording titled I Am…A Winner in 2012 where over 100 youth participated. Jovonta has recorded this album to present to the world the young man and vocalist he has become at age 22, and to take his message to youth around the world. The project includes guest appearances by Sheri Jones-Moffett (vocalist on Donald Lawrence’s Encourage Yourself) and his leader, Bishop Richard D. Howell (Shiloh Temple International Ministries). His musical influences are Destiny's Child, Donald Lawrence, and Kirk Franklin. Some of his musical mentors include Daniel Weatherspoon, Jamar Esaw, Darnell Davis, Cinque Cullar, Jamecia Bennett, Michael Ripoll, and Vashawn Mitchell, to name a few.

Jovonta co-produced this collection of 10 songs that he dubs “a masterpiece for the body of Christ”. He is a visionary, songwriter, actor, entrepreneur, community activist, college student, youth leader, minister, and teacher, but most of all he is a humble servant of Jesus Christ advancing the Kingdom of God.
